The School of Foreign Languages consists of the Department of Basic English and the Department of Modern Languages. Together, these departments serve the English language needs of METU students by offering Preparatory, Freshman and Sophomore courses. Furthermore, instruction in other foreign languages is carried out by this school.
English Proficiency Examinations required for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs are written and administered by the School of Foreign Languages. Newly admitted undergraduate and graduate students, students who want to transfer to METU from other universities, and special students who want to take courses at METU can sit the English Proficiency Examinations in January, June and September.
SFL Foreign Language Certificate Program is designed to improve the English language competence of the university graduates who wish to pursue post-graduate studies in English-medium universities, and that of the faculty at different universities in Turkey.
Academic Writing Center provides free consulting services to graduate students and the faculty within the university community. Its mission is to help individuals improve their writing skills and become more confident and effective writers, critical thinkers and communicators through face-to-face tutorials.
The School of Foreign Languages also runs English language courses for public and private institutions throughout the academic year. Upon request, the school also designs language programs for specific purposes.
